After integration and testing, we’ve now launched the service that provides a readily accessible gateway to blockchain infrastructure for Azure’s millions of monthly customers. While some companies are ready to sign up for the anticipated RPC service at launch, others will be excited to discover an additional new Ankr service available on Azure that we haven’t announced until now – a solution offering the ability for any enterprise to launch a dedicated blockchain.

## Enterprise RPC & Dedicated Blockchains For Azure Customers

While Ankr’s Enterprise RPC Service offers global, low-latency blockchain connections, Ankr’s partnership with Microsoft will now also provide access to the AppChains product. Ankr AppChains is a solution that gives enterprises the opportunity to quickly launch their own dedicated and fully customizable blockchain to power their Web3 strategies. The service is also offered on Azure Marketplace alongside the Enterprise RPC solution, with the first iteration enabling enterprises to deploy their own Polygon Supernets, and the choice of many more ecosystems on the way.

Ankr and Microsoft Partner To Offer Enterprise Node Services

After the aBNBc exploit that occurred on December 2 of last year, affected users of Ankr Staking as well as LPs who were affected on various DeFi protocols widely praised Ankr for the swift and comprehensive reimbursement of value lost. Out of 19 DeFi protocols affected, Ankr provided 100% compensation for 17 of them to compensate users for damages via airdrop. Ankr began paying these amounts out from our treasury as soon as possible without waiting to see if any of the stolen funds could be recovered, as it is part of our deep dedication to our community. **Additionally, Ankr will commit $3m more in good faith to contribute to the stability of the BNB Chain and liquid staking ecosystem.** 

There have been complaints recently raised from users of the remaining two protocols not fully reimbursed. Ankr chose to provide relief for 50% of the value lost for users holding tokens from two affected protocols – Stader and pStake. 

This article provides more clarification behind this decision and our stance on relief efforts.

## How Were Stader & pStake Users Affected By the BNB Exploit?

Like Ankr Staking, Stader and pStake are both multichain liquid staking providers with their own version of a BNB liquid staking token (BNBx and stkBNB, respectively). Some holders of these tokens had contributed liquidity to a four-way liquidity pool on the Wombat Exchange holding BNB, aBNBc, stkBNB, and BNBx. The exploiter was able to inundate the pool with a large amount of aBNBc while draining it of the other asset types.

The nature of having a mixed liquidity pool on the decentralized exchange posed a challenge in estimating the losses of affected users. Ankr had never incentivized the BNBx and stkBNB LP side of the pool, unlike the other LPs that Ankr chose to compensate at 100%. However, Ankr consulted with both Stader and pStake on the most suitable recovery mechanism that could provide the fairest reimbursement for users.

## What Actions Did Ankr Take to Provide Relief for pStake Users?

In Ankr’s talks with pStake, the pStake team was very collaborative and we found a common understanding very quickly to provide relief for users. The bilateral agreement with pStake had Ankr airdrop 2,654.352 ankrBNB and 681.051 stkBNB, to cover 50% of the losses of stkBNB liquidity providers on Wombat.

## What Actions Did Ankr Take to Provide Relief for Stader Users?

Discussions with Stader proved more difficult, but the Ankr team worked with them patiently until reaching a point where Stader suggested that Ankr cover 50% of damages with compensation conditional on the creation and use of a new BNBx-BNB LP. We found this condition unreasonable and unfair for affected users. Therefore, Ankr made the 50% reimbursement to users following Stader’s suggestion, but with a more appropriate payment mechanism in the form of a simple airdrop to affected users.

Ankr approached Stader early on and urged them to consider blocking their BNBx unstaking mechanism to prevent hostile arbitrageurs from imminently taking advantage of the aBNBx price discount. Ankr also suggested they consider a relaunch of their BNBx token because of the very high concentration of BNBx in the Wombat pool. The high concentration (half of all circulating BNBx) in Wombat was due to aggressive SD token reward incentives provided by Stader, as well as the Stader vault advertising the Wombat LP strategies as "low risk.” Stader refused to launch a new token or halt BNBx unstaking, allowing arbitrageurs to cash out freely with BNBx purchased at a deep discount on other DEXes outside of Wombat soon after the exploit (Ellipsis Finance, ApeSwap).

Given those circumstances, we strongly believe that finding the identity of the malicious arbitrageurs and seeking to recover funds from those parties would be a wiser approach for Stader to ensure its community is compensated at 100%.

## What Were the Total Compensation Amounts From the Exploit vs. The Amounts Recovered?

An article from Cointelegraph recently cited that “Ankr has the ability to compensate them (stkBNB and BNBx users) fully because it recovered 1,559 ETH (approximately $2.4 million worth at the time of writing) from Huobi Global after the attacker tried to use it to cash out.” However, this doesn’t note that Ankr has already compensated affected users across staking solutions and protocols an amount of approx. $30m.

## Ankr’s Rationale for Our Compensation Efforts

For Wombat LP compensation, our calculations showed that about 24% of that pool held Ankr liquid staking tokens funded via our liquid staking proportion on the Wombat common LP. Nevertheless, Ankr made the decision to cover 100% of the Wombat BNB LP to mitigate the adverse effects on liquid staking liquidity pools in general as a result of the exploit.

Despite the stkBNB LP and BNBx LPs never having been incentivized by Ankr, we acknowledged the aBNBc exploit affected both stkBNB and BNBx. We covered 50% of those pools with an airdrop regardless as a sign of our goodwill. After careful consideration, we believe this strategy to be fair given the circumstances of the exploit and the fact that Ankr has never provided any incentives to enter stkBNB LP and BNBx LPs.

Our BNBx and stkBNB LP compensation is more than fair given:

- Half of all BNBx and stkBNB liquid staking tokens were on Wombat due to Stader and pStake incentives. This represents an obvious concentration risk. In comparison, Ankr had only 5% of its liquid staking tokens in DEX LPs. This is because there was no need to stabilize the price of our BNB liquid staking tokens in the secondary market as the tokens are redeemable (unstakeable), presenting organic opportunities to buy them at a discount, unstake them on Ankr Staking, and receive the spread after the unbonding period has finished. Ankr cannot be held responsible for the lack of risk management of other pools. To put things in context, Ankr paid Wombat pools in all four times more than the aBNBc TVL we had on Wombat, which is more than generous.

- When following the flow of money, we can paint a better picture of what happened. The exploiter sold aBNBc on Wombat against BNB and then against BNBx and stkBNB. He then sold BNBx and stkBNB on other DEXes where there was more BNB liquidity. Surprisingly, the price of BNBx and stkBNB returned to their "fair" price within one hour. This indicates a story where some parties made money at the expense of others. Approximately 350 wallets bought BNBx on DEXes at an average cost discounted 70% during that time period with near identical trading patterns.

The Details of Ankr’s BNB Exploit Relief Efforts and Our Stance on Compensation for Stader & pStake Users

# We are excited to announce the official launch of a new ankrBNB-BNB Crypto pool on Ellipsis.

We will be offering incentives for users who provide liquidity to the new Crypto Pool by offering bribes to locked DDD holders on DotDot Finance to direct additional EPX emissions to the ankrBNB-BNB pool on Ellipsis. This will further boost the incentives of providing liquidity to this pool.

### The new Liquid Staking Token: ankrBNB

Ankr made the decision to replace aBNBb and aBNBc with ankrBNB in response to the exploit that affected both tokens. With this, the ankrBNB token becomes the main reward-bearing liquid staking token of the BNB Chain.

All liquidity providers who held aBNBb, aBNBc and BNB in Liquidity Pools received an airdrop of ankrBNB and BNB and were fully compensated (the Ellipsis aBNBb–BNB pool is one example of this). The aBNBb and aBNBc token holders were airdroped the respective amount in ankrBNB and were also fully compensated.

This decision allowed Ankr to safeguard the interests of its users and ensure that they were not negatively impacted by the exploit.

It is also important to note that the exploit in question was not a technical vulnerability in the smart contract code, but rather a social engineering attack. ### Why a new Ellipsis Crypto Pool?

As you may know, ankrBNB is the BNB reward-bearing token of Ankr where the redemption ratio increases daily based on BNB staking rewards. At the time of this writing, the current redemption ratio is 1 ankrBNB = 1.0404 BNB. This means that ankrBNB is pegged to the BNB price, but its value depends on the current redemption ratio.

Stableswap pools are specifically designed to maintain a stable peg between the tokens in the pool, typically 1:1. This means that the value of one token in the pool should always be equal to the value of the other token, allowing the pool to act as a stable exchange between the two tokens in a more efficient way. The stableswap pools were better suited for the aBNBb as its was rebase token that had a redemption ratio of 1 aBNBb = 1 BNB.

However, this is not suited for ankrBNB because the redemption ratio for ankrBNB is not fixed as it grows daily based on the BNB Chain Staking Rewards and therefore, the value of the token may not stay pegged at 1:1. In this case, it may be more appropriate to use a different type of liquidity pool that is better suited for handling tokens with variable redemption ratios.

An Ellipsis Crypto Pool is the best solution for ankBNB  because it maximizes liquidity by focusing on current prices, concentrating the liquidity, and leading to better exchange rates. When trades occur, the Crypto Pool adjusts its internal price to the area with the most liquidity without experiencing any losses, resulting in an increased capital efficiency.

After restoring security and responding to the events of the Dec. 1st exploit of our aBNBc token, Ankr has carefully reviewed the facts and taken steps to prevent any attacks like it in the future. Regardless of any damage done, we are proud of how the team handled the situation at every turn and did right by taking care of our community.

**After the hack Ankr immediately:**

- Restored security and worked with DEXs to halt trading
- Formed and executed a thorough recovery plan for the community
- Identified the exploiter (currently working with law enforcement to take appropriate legal action)

## Who Caused The Exploit?

A former team member (who is no longer with Ankr) acted maliciously to conduct a combination of a social engineering and supply chain attack, inserting a malicious code package that was able to compromise our private key once a legitimate update was made. We are in the process of working with law enforcement to prosecute the former team member and bring them to justice. Unfortunately, internal bad actors can affect any protocol and we are working on shoring up internal HR processes and safety measures to strengthen our security posture going forward.

## How Did We Respond?

### Immediate Action Taken To Halt the Attack

Right away, Ankr took several actions to minimize any damage from the exploit:

- Communicated the exploit to the public and executed plans to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
- Alerted known off-ramps to implement their emergency plans and halt trading
- Secured the smart contracts with a new key, preventing any further tampering.
- Updated smart contracts and systems to temporarily pause the movement of the underlying collateral (BNB) within our [liquid staking](https://www.ankr.com/blog/liquid-staking-a-comprehensive-guide/) product to be safe.

### Formed a Recovery Plan

Ankr took several measures to start compensating users to the full extent of the losses they incurred as a result of the exploit. **The team used our own Advanced API Tool to find every aBNBc token holder in 10 seconds – a task that would have taken several hours to complete using normal query methods on a dedicated node.**

- Took a snapshot to identify affected users
- Created a new ankrBNB token
- Airdropped the token to affected holders
- Determined reimbursement plan for most impacted users

### Reimbursed Our Community

Ankr is a Web3-native organization with an extremely strong community. To uphold this reputation, we needed to do the right thing and reimburse all token holders who were affected.

- Fixed damage to Helio (aBNBc borrowing platform) by re-stabilizing HAY Price. We will continue purchasing HAY if the token remains unpegged until all funds are spent.
- Airdropped ankrBNB to the affected aBNBc or aBNBb token holders
- Airdropped BNB to all affected DeFi liquidity providers
- Reached an agreement to reimburse Wombat stkBNB LPs and planned to provide 100% coverage of the BNB Wombat LPs.

## What Are We Improving?

Ankr is now implementing several improvements to our security posture. Here are a few notable reinforcements:

**Requiring Multi-sig Authentication & Timelocks for All Updates**

The exploit was possible partly because there was a single point of failure in our developer key. We will now implement multi-sig authentication for updates that will require signoff from all key custodians during time-restricted intervals, making a future attack of this type extremely difficult if not impossible. These features will improve security for the new ankrBNB contract and all Ankr tokens.

**Revamping internal security measures**

Ankr will now require escalated background checks for all employees (including all contractors and remote workers) while taking extra measures to verify the current status of those currently working at Ankr. We are also reviewing access rights and taking extra steps to minimize entry to any sensitive systems.

**Implementing new monitoring & notification systems**

The team was able to catch the attack extremely quickly, but we can always work on improving our response time. We are implementing new notifications systems to alert key personnel so they can be online faster during any time of day.

**Refining procedures for working with DeFi protocols**

Now that we’ve been through the experience of working with teams from other protocols after an incident, we can improve the process with precedent set for responding with international teams in streamlined communication channels.

After Action Report: Our Findings From the aBNBc Token Exploit

Ankr identified a hack on Dec. 1st, in which malicious actors accessed the developer private key and altered the smart contract for our BNB liquid staking token (aBNBc). After internal research and assessment, we estimate the damage to be $5m worth of BNB across liquidity pools in various DEXes. Ankr has already restored security and will promptly compensate affected liquidity providers.

### **What happened?**

The exploiter was able to leverage the smart contract for the aBNBc token to create an infinite amount of this token and then exchange it for USDC. The aBNBc token represents a staked version of Binance's BNB token that earns rewards from validation efforts.

The aBNBb smart contract was safe from third-party minting prior to the attack, however, the attacker was able to obtain access to the deployer key. The attacker then uploaded a new aBNBb contract that included an extra method to mint without authorization checks. The attacker minted an excess of aBNBb out of thin air and rapidly moved to swap it out for other tokens on decentralized exchanges.

The address 0xf3a used the infinite mint bug in Ankr's contract code to mint a total of 60 trillion aBNBc across 6 different transactions. The attacker was able to swap some for the stablecoin USDC and began moving them off of the Binance Smart Chain and onto Ethereum before the transactions were flagged. The Ankr team confirmed that the losses incurred are in the region of $5 million in BNB. No other liquid staking tokens or Ankr products have been affected. Likewise, Ankr’s validators, RPC API, and AppChain services continue to operate without any disruptions.

**As this occurred, Ankr simultaneously:**

1) Alerted known off-ramps to implement their emergency plans (minimum: halt trading).

2) Secured the smart contracts with a new key to prevent any further tampering.

3) Updated smart contracts and systems to temporarily pause the movement of the underlying collateral (BNB) to be safe.

### **What are the next steps for Ankr?**

The team at Ankr is working hard to resolve this issue completely and efficiently. We have taken the necessary steps to offset the loss of funds and resolve the attack.

- We are identifying all those who provided liquidity to DEXes and all protocols supporting aBNBc or aBNBb LP, as well as aBNBc collateral pools (Midas, Helio) and we will notify all affected parties.
- Ankr will purchase $5 million worth of BNB and use this to compensate the liquidity providers that have been affected by the exploit due to the drainage of liquidity pools. We understand diluted aBNBc was speculatively traded after the exploit occurred, but we are only able to compensate LP’s caught off guard by the event.
- We are discontinuing aBNBc and aBNBb tokens effective immediately, and new ankrBNB tokens will be minted and airdropped to affected aBNBc and aBNBb users.
- We will use a snapshot and airdrop the newly-released ankrBNB tokens to all valid aBNBc holders before the snapshot. User collateral is safe with all of BNB collateral.

### **What should you do as a user?**

**To mitigate risks, Ankr is issuing the following guidelines for liquidity providers:**

1. Do not trade aBNBc or speculatively buy it at a discount. 
 
2. Our snapshot taken on Dec-02-2022 12:43:18 AM +UTC will identify you if you are an affected LP.

3. Wait for the ankrBNB airdrop, which will be proportional to the amount of aBNBc and aBNBb that you held. ankrBNB will be redeemable against staked BNB.
 
This action plan allows the team at Ankr to more rapidly restore value to legitimate token holders while also accelerating the planned migration to an upgraded contract.

At this stage, all necessary precautions are being taken to promptly resolve the situation and restore lost capital. As mentioned, Ankr will purchase $5m worth of BNB to compensate previous liquidity providers that have been affected by the exploit due to the drainage of liquidity pools.

Ankr understands the concern this has created within the community and will continue working to mitigate the situation and prevent future similar incidents.

Please note that, at this time, all user funds and underlying staked assets are safe. All aBNB users will retain their positions from before, including staked LP Tokens in Farms and accumulation of rewards during that time for doing so.

The aBNBc Token Report: Security Updates Applied & Compensation for Affected LPs

***Everything you need to know about Ankr’s move to rename all reward-bearing tokens and discontinue support for reward-earning tokens to streamline users’ liquid staking experience.***

Today, Ankr is happy to announce that we are adopting a new nomenclature for our token model that will see the names of reward-bearing tokens change and the removal of our reward-earning tokens. This is a strategic decision we feel will best serve our community of holders, stakers and liquidity providers.

Our new token model ensures users can start using Ankr Staking easily and efficiently by removing reward-earning tokens that are still not supported across many DeFi platforms.

Currently, there are two types of Liquid Staking tokens in the Ankr ecosystem:

- Reward Bearing Tokens (c-tokens), e.g. aETHc formerly aETH
- Reward Earning Tokens (b-tokens), e.g. aAVAXb and aETHb (formerly fETH.)

The new nomenclature will see all reward-bearing tokens change names based on a new, more consistent standard. aETHc becomes AnkrETH; aBNBc becomes AnkrBNB; aAVAXc becomes AnkrAVAX, and so on.

At the same time, we are discontinuing the use of reward-earning tokens (aAVAXb, aETHb, aBNBb, etc).

There will be a period during which we will gradually stop active support of b-tokens. Holders of b-tokens can exchange them for c-tokens at any time. There will be no minting of new b-tokens and no further DeFi support.

The reason for this change is the lack of support by DeFi protocols for rebase tokens in general. The benefit of [liquid staking](https://www.ankr.com/blog/liquid-staking-a-comprehensive-guide/) rebase tokens, such as the 1-to-1 redemption price and ability to more easily create Stable Liquid Pools with low slippage is becoming less relevant.

When compared to one year ago, there are significantly more StableSwap pools offering custom pools to accurately setup stable liquid pools for reward-bearing tokens, whose redemption price is not 1-to-1. With more than 50 liquid staking protocols available across several chains, we have been noticing that most users understand that most liquid staking tokens are reward-bearing and how to extract value from them.

## Will Any Ankr Services Be Affected by the Change?

Ankr’s services are not changing and will continue to provide everything you are used to with even more features on the way.

The name change for c-tokens will be automatic with no need for users to do anything. We feel confident it will contribute greatly to simplifying the user experience and help us make Ankr’s product message cleaner and better suited for Web3.

## What Role Do Reward-Bearing Tokens Play In Ankr Network and the broader DeFi scene?

Rewards-bearing tokens are often issued by DeFi protocols based on the service provided. This could be borrowing, lending, or providing liquidity. In the case of Ankr, the c-tokens are issued to those staking their assets using the protocol’s staking contract.

Reward-bearing tokens represent the amount of assets staked at issuance PLUS future staking rewards. The amount of reward-bearing tokens issued is always equivalent to the amount of staked assets (ETH, AVAX, BNB, etc.).

At the end of the asset staking period, AnkrETH/AnkrBNB/AnkrAVAX/etc holders can redeem their reward-bearing tokens for their original stake plus all accumulated staking rewards. The rewards accumulated by reward-bearing tokens are reflected by Ankr’s redemption price.

However, market prices on decentralized exchanges might differ from the redemption price, which is subject to an unbonding period depending on the underlying Proof-of-stake network. Selling liquid staking tokens on a decentralized exchange provides immediate liquidity, but no guarantee that the market price is the same as Ankr’s redemption price.

**TL;DR**

**1. Ankr doesn't store PII or have a method to correlate wallet transactions to IP addresses.**

**2. Ankr does not use our RPC to front-run transactions (MEV exploitation on your transactions).**

**3. We continue to work on our decentralization roadmap while prioritizing quality of service.**

Ankr’s goal is to provide the best possible blockchain connection experience for our builders and users. This includes an emphasis on best-in-class delivery as well as protecting user privacy. To this end, we want to clarify our IP collection policy.

## When Does Ankr Use IP Addresses?

For service delivery purposes, we temporarily record IP addresses to set usage limits and monitor for denial of service attacks against our infrastructure. Though we do look at high-level data around the success rate of transactions made over the blockchain RPC, we do not correlate wallet transactions made over the infrastructure to the IP address making the RPC request. Thus, **we do not store, exploit, or share any information regarding Personal Identifiable Information (PII), including wallet addresses.** In accordance with our privacy philosophy (as well as the terms of the Cloudflare service we use), we store IP address data only as long as it is useful to fulfill its purpose in ensuring users receive the highest quality service possible. Additionally, unlike other RPC providers in the market, we feel it’s important to clarify that we do not perform any kind of MEV from our RPC service in any way.

By design, the Cloudflare service Ankr uses is based on the same approach to [data privacy](https://www.cloudflare.com/resources/assets/slt3lc6tev37/2PpV3ceAMWJLMlXvDvGaWH/4fdc05639e8f8b664b225ab6b596d26b/how_the_cloudflare_network_maintains_data_privacy.pdf):

*“Cloudflare has no interest in what any specific individuals are doing on the Internet and has no means of connecting any one IP address to any one natural person.”*

Ankr collects IP addresses in different ways based on the user’s plan:

**Public (Free) Plans:**

- Rate limiting: Ankr must track the use of RPC services via IP address to implement request limits for our different service levels.
- GeoIP steering: To correctly serve traffic and route it to the closest data centers, it is necessary to obtain IP addresses for delivering low-latency responses.
- Service improvements: IP address data contributes to the collective internal insights Ankr gathers to improve services for customers in terms of speed and reliability.

**Premium & Enterprise Plans:**

- Premium telemetry functionality: Our paid users want telemetry data and the ability to monitor performance and resolve issues that arise.
- Rate limiting: Ankr must track the use of RPC services via IP address to ensure we can deliver approximately 1,500 requests per second limit for Premium plans.
- GeoIP steering: To correctly serve traffic and route it to the closest data centers, it is necessary to obtain IP addresses for delivering low-latency returns.
- IP Whitelisting: Ankr has a feature to limit the access of the RPC requests with a user-defined IP whitelist.

This is the minimal amount of information that is required to act as a high-quality RPC provider, but we take all possible measures to preserve user confidentiality.

We are continuously reviewing our policies as we listen to user feedback and adjust policies as technology changes. This is an evolving process, and our current policy terms and conditions will be updated soon. In addition, note that we do comply with court orders as is our legal responsibility as a company established in the United States. We seek continuous improvement, and we constantly review our policies to protect user privacy while retaining the functionality that is required to run a public RPC network. **As we continue to implement our roadmap to increasingly decentralize services, Ankr will keep the guiding principles of blockchain at the forefront of our products – and the privacy of our community will always be an integral part of this.**
